Zomato has rolled out a new feature to help reduce food waste by offering cancelled orders at lower prices. The company found that around 4 lakh orders are cancelled each month, and CEO Deepinder Goyal explained that these orders, still good but no longer needed, will be offered to customers who are within a 3 km range of the delivery partner. The orders will be delivered in their original packaging to keep them fresh.
The ‘Food Rescue’ feature will automatically show up on the app’s homepage whenever a cancelled order is available. The goal is to sell these orders at a great price while cutting down on unnecessary food waste. Goyal mentioned that while Zomato works to reduce cancellations, this feature offers a smart way to address the issue.
Under this program, restaurants will get paid for the cancelled order and also receive a share of the payment from the new customer who buys the order. Restaurants can choose not to participate if they don’t want to. Delivery partners will also be fully compensated for both the original and the new delivery routes.
