Why Japan’s Attempt to Pay Women to Marry Rural Men Was a Total Flop

Japan's plan to give cash and train tickets to Tokyo women who married rural men has been scrapped after a lot of criticism. The scheme offered up to 600,000 yen ($4,140) and free train rides to matchmaking events. Critics ripped into it, saying it was outdated and disrespectful to women's independence. This failure shows ongoing problems with gender and population issues in rural Japan.
