After months of fear and anxiety, the residents of Mahsi in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, finally took matters into their own hands and killed the last wolf from a notorious pack that had been wreaking havoc in their community. The villagers struck on Saturday night when the wolf tried to hunt a goat, marking the end of a terrifying chapter for them.

For weeks, this wolf pack had been the source of nightmares, causing numerous attacks on both livestock and people. Villagers were constantly on edge, knowing that just a few months ago, nine children and a woman had tragically lost their lives to these ferocious animals, with more than 50 others injured. It’s been a tough few months for everyone, and the community breathed a collective sigh of relief when the final wolf was put down.

The hunt for this last wolf was no easy task; it had managed to dodge capture for over three weeks! Forest officials had caught the fifth wolf back in September, and since then, the pressure was on to find the remaining members of the pack. Sadly, by the time the forest department got to the scene, it was too late to intervene as both the goat and the wolf lay lifeless.

Ajit Singh, the Divisional Forest Officer, mentioned that while they couldn’t confirm the last wolf as a man-eater (no attacks had occurred after the capture of the others), it was definitely linked to the pack that had terrorized the locals. Now, the forest department is gearing up for a thorough investigation and is set to file an FIR regarding the incident. It’s been a long journey for the villagers, but with the threat finally gone, they can look forward to a safer and more peaceful future.
