External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed deep concern over the attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ontario, calling the incident “deeply concerning.” The attack happened on Monday when protesters carrying Khalistani flags clashed with people at the Hindu Sabha Mandir. Unverified videos on social media showed violent scenes, with people hitting each other with flagpoles and getting into fistfights.
In response, Jaishankar condemned the incident, stressing that it was unacceptable for Indian diplomats to be under surveillance in Canada. He criticized Canada for making accusations without providing clear evidence. Canadian authorities have arrested three people in connection with the attack. Peel Regional Police confirmed that the arrests were for assault with a weapon and assaulting a police officer.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence, saying all Canadians should have the right to practice their faith safely. He thanked the Peel Regional Police for acting quickly to protect the community. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly attempt” to intimidate Indian diplomats.
Earlier, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the extremist attack and called for stronger protection for places of worship in Canada. The MEA urged the Canadian government to act immediately to protect religious institutions and punish those responsible for the violence. This incident comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, especially since 2023, when Prime Minister Trudeau accused India of being involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
