The Health Ministry of India has introduced tougher health warnings for cigarette packs to help reduce tobacco use. The updated rules state that cigarette packs must carry the text “SMOKING CAUSES PAINFUL DEATH” in white letters on a red background. The helpline number “QUIT TODAY CALL 1800-11-2356” will appear in white on a black background. In addition, two graphic images showing the harmful effects of tobacco will be printed on the packs, and these images will change every 12 months.
The announcement, made on December 2, 2024, also specifies the exact colors for the text and images: white (C:0%, M:0%, Y:0%, K:0%), red (C:0%, M:100%, Y:100%, K:0%), and black (C:0%, M:0%, Y:0%, K:100%). The warnings must be printed with a resolution of at least 300 DPI to ensure good quality.
The new regulations will take effect as soon as they are published in the official gazette, marking a big step in India’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related health issues.
