Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the state government is considering offering a 25% attendance concession and 10 grace marks for student athletes. This plan is meant to reduce academic pressures on students who are also pursuing sports while encouraging more participation in athletics. The proposal was made during the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) awards ceremony in Bangalore.
At the event, Siddaramaiah praised the KOA for its role in promoting sports culture and helping athletes compete at state, national, and international levels. He also revealed that the state has set aside Rs 6 crore for gold medalists and Rs 4 crore for silver medalists. However, he pointed out that no athlete from Karnataka has yet won an Olympic medal and urged local athletes to aim for global success.
Speaking at the ceremony, Siddaramaiah shared that, while he was never a competitive athlete himself, he has always been passionate about sports. He recalled participating in various sports during his school and college days, even though he didn’t win any major awards. He also mentioned receiving two awards at the Legislators’ Sports Meet.
Dr. K Govindaraj, MLC and president of the KOA, spoke about Karnataka’s progressive sports policies. He highlighted that the state provides 3% job reservations in the police and forest departments and 2% in other government sectors for athletes. This year marks the 22nd edition of the KOA awards, which continues to honor and support the sports community in Karnataka.
