News Update
Recent updates say the Israeli military believes Hamas has taken a big hit since the conflict blew up on October 7. They claim the group isn’t the powerhouse it used to be, estimating that at least half of its members are gone. Now, they’re supposedly operating more like guerrillas around Gaza.
Netanyahu has been pretty clear about Israel’s position, telling folks at the UN that “Hamas has got to go.” He thinks if Hamas is left even a bit intact, they’ll just regroup and keep being a threat. He mentioned that Israeli forces have wiped out about 90% of Hamas’s rockets and have either captured or taken out a good chunk of their fighters.
But this military win comes with a heavy price for civilians. The UN says the ongoing fighting has displaced a massive number of people in Gaza, with around a million crammed into a tiny humanitarian zone that’s less than 15% of the area. This zone is really struggling with basic needs and infrastructure, making the humanitarian crisis even worse.
The conflict kicked off when Hamas launched an attack into Israel, leading to tragic losses and hostages. It’s a complicated situation where military moves and urgent humanitarian needs just don’t seem to match up.
