The Indian Army is expanding its recruitment to include experts in areas like cybersecurity, information warfare, IT, and linguistics. This move, announced by Lieutenant General Rakesh Kapoor, is aimed at strengthening the Army’s technological edge to face modern warfare challenges.
Recruitment Plans and Pilot Success
The Army has successfully completed a pilot project to recruit domain specialists. Building on this success, the first phase of regular recruitment will offer 17 specialized positions, with five positions dedicated to strategic linguistics. Officers will be recruited at the postgraduate level, and soldiers at the graduate level. The recruitment process will include Service Selection Board (SSB) interviews, with advertisements to be published soon.
Inclusion of Women and Gender Neutrality
In a major step towards gender equality, the recruitment process will be open to both men and women. This ensures equal opportunities in the armed forces. The Territorial Army (TA) has already started bringing in domain experts, and now, this initiative will extend to the regular Army recruitment.
Technology as a Force Multiplier
Lieutenant General Kapoor highlighted how important technology is for modern warfare. The Defence Ministry has declared 2024–25 as the ‘Years of Technology Absorption.’ The Army is focusing on 16 technology clusters to bring in new innovations, including cybersecurity, AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and robotics. It is also looking into advanced areas like 5G/6G networks, directed energy weapons, and blockchain technology.
