On Thursday evening, five people, including a woman, were arrested by the Esplanade Police in Chennai for trying to smuggle crystal meth. The arrests happened after a routine security check at a vehicle checkpoint near Mannadi. Acting on a tip-off, the police set up the checkpoint, where they stopped two men riding a motorbike. When the men couldn’t give clear answers during questioning, the police became suspicious.
After searching the motorbike, the officers found methamphetamine, or crystal meth, and arrested the two men. Further investigation led to the arrest of three other people: Dinesh Prathap, Santosh, Praveen, Tejas, and Fathima. The police also seized two motorcycles and recovered 7 grams of methamphetamine from the suspects.
This bust adds to a string of drug-related arrests in Chennai. Earlier in October, on the 24th, the Chennai police arrested seven college students who had set up a secret methamphetamine lab in their home. A week later, on October 29, the Narcotics Control Bureau seized 2.7 kg of methamphetamine worth Rs 27 crore and arrested two other suspects in a separate raid.
