A 50-year-old woman from Karnataka, who had been missing for 25 years, has been found at an old age home in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. Sakamma, from Dananayakanakere village in Ballari district, lost contact with her family after attending a relative’s wedding in Hosapete. While there, she mistakenly boarded a train to Chandigarh, which led her to face many struggles across different northern states of India.
Eventually, Sakamma found shelter in an old age home in Mandi. During the years she was missing, her family filed a police report and even performed her last rites, believing she was dead. The breakthrough came when a young IPS officer visited the old age home. While talking to the residents, he heard a woman speaking Kannada and decided to ask more questions. After hearing Sakamma’s story, the officer reached out to the Karnataka Social Welfare Department, which helped reconnect her with her family.
Authorities have arranged for Sakamma to return to Karnataka, and she is set to reunite with her family on Wednesday, finally ending a long and painful separation.
