Two Democratic senators, Jack Reed (Rhode Island) and Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire), are calling for an investigation into Elon Musk’s involvement in SpaceX contracts with the US government. They raised concerns over national security, especially regarding Musk’s reported communications with Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin and other high-ranking members of the Russian government. The senators sent a letter to the Departments of Defense and Justice asking them to investigate whether these alleged interactions should lead to a review of Musk’s ongoing government contracts.

The letter questions Musk’s trustworthiness as a government contractor and clearance holder, warning that his connections to Russia, an adversary of the US, could pose risks. The senators pointed out that Musk, as a major contractor with the US government, has significant influence over sensitive defense and intelligence programs. “Communications between Russian government officials and anyone with security clearance could put our security at risk,” they wrote.

The letter also mentions a recent Wall Street Journal report that uncovered Musk’s communications with Putin and other Russian officials, including Sergei Kiriyenko, who is linked to Russia’s efforts to influence the 2024 US presidential election. Despite concerns about Musk’s actions, especially his sometimes unpredictable behavior, the US government has continued to award contracts to his companies. SpaceX, for example, has been instrumental in providing satellite launches and its Starlink satellite internet service, which has been vital for Ukraine during its conflict with Russia.

SpaceX plays a crucial role in US defense and intelligence operations. The company holds contracts worth over $700 million with the Space Force’s National Security Space Launch program and is working on a satellite network for the Space Force through its Starshield unit. SpaceX is also involved in a $1.8 billion classified contract with the National Reconnaissance Agency. The senators emphasized that contractors like SpaceX must act responsibly when handling national security matters.

In response to the allegations, Musk posted a comment on X saying, “I’m going to find out who’s making these accusations and nuke them.” If the investigation moves forward, it will examine whether Musk’s communications with Russian officials could threaten US security, especially as Musk’s role in government contracts continues to grow.
