Zomato is getting backlash after a user on X pointed out that the company sells analogue Paneer to restaurants. This product, labeled as ‘Analogue’ on Zomato’s website, is made with vegetable oils instead of traditional milk. The user, Sumit Behal, criticized the platform for misleading customers about how healthy Paneer dishes really are.

The analogue Paneer is priced at Rs 210 per kg, which is much lower than the usual market price of Rs 410-450 per kg for real Paneer. The product is promoted for use in dishes like Tikka and gravy, raising concerns about how transparent restaurants are about their food sourcing.

Analogue Paneer is seen as a synthetic alternative that misses out on the nutritional benefits of real Paneer, such as high protein and essential vitamins. Health experts have shared worries about the hydrogenated vegetable oils used to make analogue Paneer, as these oils may contain harmful trans fats linked to heart problems.

This controversy has sparked conversations about food quality and the responsibility of food service providers to inform customers about what’s in their meals.
