The underground drainage project phase III in Tiruchi is running into some issues. The local guys are stuck waiting for the State to give them the okay on a budget that’s shot up to ₹336 crore. This project kicked off back in 2020 under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme and aims to help around 32,000 households.
Right now, about 90% of the work is done, but they hit a few bumps. The Tiruchi Corporation expanded the project to cover more areas, which jacked up costs. Plus, the Goods and Service Tax shot up from 12% to 18%, leading to a need for an extra ₹90 crore. They sent the revised proposal to the State a few months back but are still waiting for a thumbs-up.

Not getting that approval is raising some eyebrows, especially since the final phase is all about installing important machinery and pricey pumps. The project was supposed to wrap up by August, but with approvals still hanging, it looks like it might drag on. And with the northeast monsoon coming in around the third week of October, things could get even trickier. An official from the Corporation said they’re hustling to get the revised estimate approved soon, hoping to finish this crucial project.
